How to steer clear of Social Media distractions and focus on your work

Our social media channels are a great thing to have to keep in touch with friends and family. However, it can be difficult to keep up with, especially if your phone continually goes off. This is because our phones are the most precious piece of technology we have, but it can also be the worst for us. Today I'm going to share with you How to Steer Clear of Social Media Distractions and Focus on Your Work.



Activate Time Limits on Social Media

 

Certain mobile apps such as Facebook and Instagram have a time-tracking function, which helps to see how much you use these apps each day, as well as giving you a daily average. For those certain social media apps that have an optional time limit you can set for each day, and then once you have reached your time limit, an in-app notification pops up to let you know.


However, this setting doesn't block you from accessing the app or even logs you out. Once the in-app notification shows, it just disappears and lets you continue scrolling through the app.


On that note, the app will make you fully aware of how quickly 10 minutes turned into 30 minutes. However, rather than limit the time you spend on these apps, why not try to cut social media apps completely for a certain amount of time a week. Not only will this let you focus more over the weekend, but it will also let you focus on family time and relaxation after a hard and busy work week and so forth.


Although there are exceptions to this, in that period of time where you don't go on social media, you are still allowed to use your phone for video calls and google maps to get around but only for that use, nothing else. Why not give this a try and see how you feel after it!


Turn Your Phone off when Studying or at Work

 

Now it's not much to say "turn your ringer off or put it in airplane mode and shove it in your pocket." No, my suggestion is turning it off completely.


As much as we hate to admit it, most of us spend far too much time on our phones. For example, Simon is trying to finish that Business assessment that's due tomorrow, but he remembers that his granny was going to text him to sort out the living room because she can't move the couch herself; so you decide to check your phone she has. However, as it turns out she didn't get back to you on it yet, although you receive a notification about a new post that Dave just posted, and of course, you need to look at it and read through the comments of what other people have said, and before you know it you've just wasted an hour that could've been used for studying or working productively. #canrelate

But taking the time to turn off your phone and study or work effectively, will have significant benefits, such as improved grades or being promoted in the business you work with. It's amazing what an hour of having no phone can make a huge difference.


Disable Notifications

 

It is so easy to get distracted from a simple notification that popped up on your phone. Then as you check the first notification, another one pops up and so forth. On average people can receive up to 45.9 notifications or more a day. This can be very stressful and overwhelming, especially if you are trying to concentrate. My advice is to turn off all push notifications for a week and you will most certainly see a huge difference how you feel. Sometimes we see our phones being our number 1 priority, as though we are cuffed to it, but even taking that little time away from it will help you feel better about yourself.


A helpful app that is great for keeping notifications at bay is an app called "RescueTime". This app helps you to track your activity on apps and how long you use them for. It can also let you set goals on how long you want to spend on each app and will send alert notifications, so you stay aware of your screen time. It's also worth-while mentioning that IOS already has a built-in tool called Screen Time that tracks how much time you spend on your iPhone, including the exact number of minutes spent on different apps. From your home screen, swipe right to find a summary and then tap the summary tab to look deeper into it.


Make It a Treat

 

Think of social media as a treat for all your hard work during the day or week (whatever you prefer). You might not buy a brand new game every day or go out to buy clothes every weekend, but rewarding yourself with these kinds of small treats makes you feel like you deserve it. So next time, only allow yourself screen time when you've achieved something or you've done something productive first. This might help you think differently about social media.


Meet People In Real Life

 


There are so many ways you can interact with and meet people in real life. You could do things such as joining a social club, attend a talk, or organize a night out with friends. Whatever you choose to do, you'll be making connections with new people in reality, which totally beats finding friends on Facebook. By doing this, you get to see what the other person looks like, talks like, sounds like, and more, which will help you to bond much better.
